A significant share of women has secretly casted ballots different than their spouses and partners as Republicans continue to rage at a new ad reminding women they can keep their vote secret from their husbands.
The new YouGov survey—highlighted earlier in The Washington Post—found that about 12 percent of women say they have secretly voted for someone different than who their spouses or partners support in the past. The poll also found that about 9 percent of men said they have secretly voted differently from their partners.
The poll highlights the significant gender gap in the 2024 election.
According to the survey, 40 percent of women believe their spouse or partner is voting for Trump in the upcoming election while 38 percent say they will support Harris. Ten percent of women said they were not sure who their partner or spouse will vote for.
On the other hand, 46 percent of men believe their partners or spouses will vote for Trump and 40 percent said they will vote for Harris. Just 3 percent of men said they were not sure who their spouse or partner would vote for.
However, The Washington Post’s Philip Bump noted that other polling from YouGov shows Trump with a 5-point advantage among men while Harris has a 7-point advantage among women. He wrote that this “suggests that a lot of men may be misunderstanding how their spouses plan to vote.”
This poll, conducted Oct. 28-30 among 1,122 adults, comes as a new ad narrated by actress Julia Roberts showed two women secretly signaling to each other in a voting location that they’re voting for Harris while one of the women’s husbands votes for former President Donald Trump. After casting her ballot for Harris, one of the women lets her husband believe she voted for Trump.
The ad has caused outrage among Republican men.
Conservative pundit Charlie Kirk claimed the Harris campaign wants women to “undermine” their husbands by casting their votes for the vice president after previously signaling they would back Trump. Fox News host Jesse Watters likened women secretly voting for Harris to an “affair” as he joked with his co-hosts about the topic.
And Newt Gingrich—former Speaker of the House—insisted it was like a betrayal of wedding vows. He received widespread backlash for the remarks as social media users called him out over his own infidelity scandal.
Some pundits and reports have also suggested that there will be many “secret” voters for Harris. Some people knocking on doors have found that women might be secretly casting their votes for Harris because they do not want to deal with the fallout from their Trump-supporting husbands.
